Presented by Librarian Ellen Harvey in the Plaut Room.

For grades 8 +. All supplies provided.

Do you want to learn to knit? Or are you a knitter who would like help learning a new technique? This Summer the Library is pleased to offer Knitting for Teens. It meets daily August 16-20. If you are entering eighth grade or older, the time slot is from 3: 30 to 5 PM.

No materials are necessary for beginners. We will spend the first day making our own needles with wood and polymer clay. The next day we will start knitting and participants will learn what can be made with a simple square or rectangle: a belt, a skinny scarf, a cell phone or ipod cozy, or a drawstring treasure bag. You decide!

If you are already a knitter you may bring a project and work on it. Learn to purl, rib, or even do a cable stitch.

Supplies for beginners are provided, so you need only bring your interest and enthusiasm!

Good Night, Mr. Tom is a powerful, moving novel by Michelle Magorian. It follows a young boy, William Beech, who is evacuated from London during the air-raids of World War II and put into the care of Tom Oakley, an elderly recluse. Thanks to Tom, William Beech is able to experience a new life of love and care.

Discussion led by New Canaan native and Stamford teacher, Daphne Teittinen.

The Red Pyramid, the first book in Rick Riordan's new series, The Kane Chronicles, was released today. The New Canaan Library has both the book and the audiobook available right now.

The online poll took place from Aug. 24 through Sept. 18, with the winners announced during Teen Read Week by WWE Divas Brie Bella and Nikki Bella, with a special appearance by John Green. In the back corner of the New Canaan Library's teen area there is a large shelftop display of the 25 books that are nominated for the 2009 Teen's Top Ten award. Each book has a bright yellow label on the spine saying "2009 TTT nominee." If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, you can cast an online vote for your favorite between August 24th and September 18th.

Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year. Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country.

There's still time to enter the TeenReads Beach Bag Contest -- it's open until June 25th. The prize is a beach bag full of 12 great beach books plus lots of other summer goodies. Not hard to enter -- just write a paragraph about which of the 12 books you'd most like to read and why. The TeenReads site also has lots of great book reviews, author interviews, and the "ultimate teen reading list" with 300 titles.

A fifth TWILIGHT SAGA book???

The library recently got a request for Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. It's supposed to be a new book in the Twilight series, telling the beginning of the story from Edward's point of view instead of Bella's. When I looked around to see if I could order it, I discovered that the author started writing it but probably isn't going to finish it. However, she's posted the 12-chapter draft on her website -- take a look:

WIZARD ROCK CONCERT THIS THURSDAY!!

The New Canaan Library will be rocking with Wizard Rock on Thursday, January 3rd at 6:00 pm when The Whomping Willows, Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons and Snidget will be appearing in the Adrian Lamb Room in a program sponsored by the Friends of the New Canaan Library. The Whomping Willows is the wizard rock project of Matt Maggiacomo, a singer/songwriter from Providence Rhode Island. He features music from the perspective of a magical tree with a bad temper based on the Whomping Willow in the Harry Potter novels. He performs with an acoustic guitar and vocals, combines humor and light political commentary and is a favorite of “wizard wrock fans” all over the country. The Whomping Willows will be joined by Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons, the first Irish Wizard Rock band. This one-woman band created by Amy Snow is influenced by celtic music, jazz and anti-folk. She has released her first album, “Hogwarts, a Mystery” in October and been on the Wizard Rock scene for over two years. The third band performing at this event is Snidget, a folk-rock wizard that explores the darker and more serious themes of the Harry Potter books. Snidget combines her voice and her hammered dulcimer to create a unique sound, pulling musical inspiration from bands such as Eisley and Nickel Creek. Her debut recording will be released in January 2008.
Pizza and soft drinks will be served. All Library programs are free and open to the public. This program is fun for all ages. Make an appointment at the Library to get some valuable advice from applications consultant Joe Cooper, a college English Composition professor and newspaper columnist. In a 30-minute session, he will help you come up with ideas for thoughtful, substantive responses to the "prompts" posed by particular colleges and the Common Ap. If you already have a draft of your essay, please bring 2 copies with you to your session. Joe will go through it with you, offering his comments and insights to help you create a narrative that admissions officers will view as distinctive and distinguishing.

We've rearranged the graphic novels to make them easier to find. There are separate shelves for MANGA, DC, MARVEL, CLASSICS, SANDMAN, GRAPHIC NONFICTION (like biography, true crime, mythology, and the supernatural), and OTHER SERIES A-Z. And all the call numbers start with GN now, instead of 741.5. So..... if you look up Fruits Basket # 7 in the catalog, you'll see the call number is GN MANGA. Then you go to the manga shelf and look for the Fruits Basket series. The series are arranged alphabetically by title. I know this might not immediately sound a lot easier, but give it a try! And let us know what you think.

DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS FOR TEENS

The Library has a new collection of about 300 downloadable audiobooks for young adults and children, with titles ranging from classics to brand new bestsellers. New titles will be added every month. You need Windows media player to listen to them -- either an MP3 player, your computer, or a new cell phone with WMA. At this point, the books are not compatible with the IPod. The Library has 6 Windows-based MP3 players for you to borrow -- ask about them at the Information Desk. Hint: upgrade now to Windows Media Player version 10 -- it has a feature that will automatically sync the download to your MP3 player.

New Teen Mags -- what do you think?

The library subscribes to 10 magazines now (including GamePro, Seventeen, & Teen People) that are read mostly by middle and high school students. We're thinking about adding these 4 -- would you read one or more of them? which ones? if we can only get 2 of the 4, which ones would you choose? can you suggest any others?

1. CosmoGirl. CosmoGirl! is a magazine for real girls with real issues -- guys, beauty, fashion, money, parents, school, changing bodies, and more. Each bimonthly issue has insider beauty and fashion secrets from the stars and their stylists, plus celeb and runway fashion trends that readers can actually afford and find at local malls. CosmoGirl! gets personal and gives realistic advice about situations at home, at school, and with friends with an eye toward encouraging individuality and confidence

2. Skateboarding. The voice of skateboarding. Each issue is filled with interviews with the pros, trick tips on how to improve your skating, and worldwide coverage of skateboarding. Designed to spread the culture, each issue brings bold, inside coverage of equipment, events, personalities & techniques.

3. Teen Vogue. teenVOGUE magazine began as a version of Vogue magazine for a younger audience. The magazine focuses on fashion and celebrities, but also offers information the latest entertainment and feature stories on current issues and events.

4. Teen Voices. Teen Voices is about girls being themselves and realizing their potential. There are enough magazines that tell girls how to look and act to impress a boy or buy certain products. Teen Voices honors the authentic voices of teenage and young adult women. Teen Voices challenges the mainstream media's image of girls by providing an intelligent alternative packed with original writing, poetry and artwork. We encourage our readers to write articles on self-esteem, racism, sexism, feminism, popular culture, health, and other issues important to them.
