New This Summer: Teen Knitting at the Library


Interested in knitting?

Sign up for a week of

Teen Knitting Camp at the New Canaan Library.

Monday through Friday, August 16 to 20, from 3:30 to 5 PM

Presented by Librarian Ellen Harvey in the Plaut Room.

For grades 8 +. All supplies provided.

Do you want to learn to knit? Or are you a knitter who would like help learning a new technique? This Summer the Library is pleased to offer Knitting for Teens. It meets daily August 16-20. If you are entering eighth grade or older, the time slot is from 3: 30 to 5 PM.

No materials are necessary for beginners. We will spend the first day making our own needles with wood and polymer clay. The next day we will start knitting and participants will learn what can be made with a simple square or rectangle: a belt, a skinny scarf, a cell phone or ipod cozy, or a drawstring treasure bag. You decide!

If you are already a knitter you may bring a project and work on it. Learn to purl, rib, or even do a cable stitch.

Supplies for beginners are provided, so you need only bring your interest and enthusiasm!

Young Adult Book Discussion for Grades 6 to 9:

Good Night, Mr. Tom
by Michelle Magorian

Part 2: Wed. July 21 6-7:30 pm
(finish the book)

Good Night, Mr. Tom is a powerful, moving novel by Michelle Magorian. It follows a young boy, William Beech, who is evacuated from London during the air-raids of World War II and put into the care of Tom Oakley, an elderly recluse. Thanks to Tom, William Beech is able to experience a new life of love and care.

Discussion led by New Canaan native and Stamford teacher, Daphne Teittinen.

Pizza & lemonade will be served.

EXTENDED HOURS FOR EXAM STUDY


THREE LATE NIGHTS: During final exams at New Canaan High School, the Library will stay open until 10 pm for individual and group study. The late nights are Wednesday 6/16, Thursday 6/17, and Monday 6/21.

THE RED PYRAMID IS HERE


The Red Pyramid, the first book in Rick Riordan's new series, The Kane Chronicles, was released today. The New Canaan Library has both the book and the audiobook available right now.

If you liked the Greek gods and the adventures in the five-book Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, you'll probably like this series too. This time, the heroes and gods are Egyptian. You can read the first chapter of The Red Pyramid by clicking HERE.

EXTENDED HOURS FOR EXAM STUDY


On three nights this week (NCHS midterm exam week) the Library will stay open until 10 pm for individual and group study. The late nights are Tuesday 1/19, Wednesday 1/20, and Thursday 1/21. The Library is closed for MLK Day on Monday 1/18.
